Letter to the Editor

I am writing to express my support for the article published in www.abc.net.au on November 3rd, 2019 by Tom Forrest, entitled 'Green School students Britt Koens and her sister Marien make biofuel for Bali buses'. I was very impressed with one part of the article about black market oil.

Cooking oil is essential for daily cooking, especially for frying food. Indonesians love to eat fried food; this is the reason why they rely so much on cooking oil. As an Indonesian, I know that some people cannot afford to buy cooking oil. The high price of cooking oil makes them buy a re-packaged of cooking oil. Indonesian consumers also already know that smaller cafes or restaurants use re-packaged cooking oil repeatedly. Coupled with the fact that some of them also do the same at home, without knowing about the health risk—it is very clear that we do not have enough knowledge about it.

The students are doing such a great job by not only asking the restaurant for oil, but to also educate people about the health risk. Considering that this project is continually growing, I hope it can raise health awareness of Indonesians about using re-packaged cooking oil repeatedly.
